Whether you want to complete a grand tour of Central America or travel overland from Canada to Mexico, we’ve got your routes planned, taking in some of the world’s most spectacular scenery and stunning sights along the way.

Grand tour of Central America
Minimum duration: 1 month
Start: Cayes and Atolls, Belize
End: San Blas Archipelago, Panama

1. Cayes and Atolls, Belize
Start by snorkelling, scuba diving or fishing off the hundreds of cayes and atolls which form part of Belize’s spectacular Great Barrier Reef and don’t miss the Great Blue Hole, a collapsed cave.

2. Tikal, Guatemala
Continue onto Tikal, arguably the most impressive Maya ruin in Central America. This ancient city is dominated by five temples and surrounded by thousands of other structures, all surrounded by jungle.

Honduras3. Highlands, Guatemala
Explore the Highlands in Guatemala – with its volcanoes, mountain ranges, lakes and valleys, this is one of the country’s most beautiful areas.

4. Bay Islands, Honduras
Head across the border to the Bay Islands in Honduras in October or November to catch a glimpse of the elusive whale shark, or simply spend your days sailing and fishing on a remote island.

5. San Salvador, El Salvador
Sample the heady mix of galleries, museums and nightclubs in San Salvador, El Salvador’s buzzing capital nestled at the foot of a volcano.

6. Granada, Nicaragua
Discover beautiful pastel colonial buildings in Granada, the most architecturally interesting town in Nicaragua and an ideal base for exploring nearby lakes and volcanoes.

7. Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua
Check-out the magical Isla de Ometepe – formed by two volcanoes, this island sits in the middle of a freshwater lake and its jungle rainforest teems with monkeys, as well as beaches and mountains to explore.

8. Monteverde and Santa Elena, Costa Rica
Next, head onto the nature reserves of Monteverde and Santa Elena in Costa Rica  – take a canopy tour of the cloud-forests to see lush vegetation and hundreds of wildlife species.

9. Parque Nacional Corcovado, Costa Rica
Search for rare animals like ocelot and tapir in Parque Nacional Corcovado – there are also deserted beaches, waterfalls and rainforests to explore.

10. Bocas Del Toro Archipelago, Panama
Chill-out on the Bocas Del Toro Archipelago, one of the most remote and beautiful provinces in Panama, which boasts tropical rainforests, beaches and mangroves.

11. San Blas Archipelago, Panama
End your trip by really getting away from in all on the San Blas Archipelago – strung out along the Caribbean coast, the vast majority of these islands are uninhabited.

Overland from Canada to Mexico
Minimum duration: 1 month
Start: Jasper National Park, Canada
End: Tumacacori Historical National Park, USA

1. Jasper National Park, Canada
Start in Jasper National Park in the heart of Canada’s majestic Rocky Mountains.

2. Banff National Park, Canada
Continue onto Banff  National Park, one of the best spots in Canada to try alpine skiing and hiking.

3. Kalispell, USA
Follow the US93 across the border, pass Glacier National Park and explore the river valleys around Kalispell.

4. Missoula, USA
Next, head to Missoula, a good base for visits to Flathead Lake and Flathead Indian Reservation, made famous as the setting for the film A River Runs Through It.

Sun Valley, USA5. Bitterroot Valley, USA
Stop-off in scenic Bitterroot Valley  – site of the first white explorers in the region and epic tribal struggles.

6. Sun Valley, USA
Cross the Continental divide into Idaho  and follow the Salmon River to Sun Valley, the oldest and most exclusive ski resort in the country.

7. Snake River Plain, USA
Check-out the contrasting scenery of Snake River Plain –  the lava flows and empty deserts make this one of the USA’s most inhospitable destinations but the gorge near Twin Falls is an impressive sight.

8. Great Basin Desert, USA
Tackle the lonely 500-mile route across the Great Basin Desert – an unforgettably beautiful journey.

9. Las Vegas, USA
Sample the bright lights and frenetic energy of Las Vegas – try your luck in one of the city’s famous grand casinos or take in a show.

10. Arizona, USA
Explore the sights of Arizona – marvel at the Hoover Dam light-show and take a private flight over Grand Canyon for breathtaking eagle-eye views.

11. Sonora Desert, USA
Soak-up the lushness of the world’s greenest desert, Sonora, stock-up with supplies in Phoenix or Tucson, then stop-off for photos at the country’s only remaining Cold War-era missile silo – the controversial Biosphere 2 scientific research centre.

12. Tumacacori Historical National Park, USA
End your trip in Tumacacori Historical National Park just before reaching the Mexican border – home to the captivating ruins of centuries-old Spanish colonial missions spread across over 47 acres.
